Quick story for your next coffee break: It all started with a chance encoun=
ter at a bike race and subsequently, a broken office chair.=C2=A0

It was at the first-ever UCI Mountain Bike World Championships in Durango, =
CO that Cane Creek=E2=80=99s Peter Gilbert stumbled upon a design that woul=
d change the way bicycles went together forever. There, Peter came across a=
 young racer and inventor, John Rader. Rader showed Peter a new design of a=
 headset that allowed you to swap forks in an instant, using only an allen =
wrench. The =E2=80=98threadless=E2=80=99 system was simple, lightweight, an=
d far easier to adjust and maintain than the clunky threaded headsets that =
had dominated bicycles for decades.

Peter helped our company (then-named Dia Compe USA) secure the rights to th=
e design and we launched the first Aheadset in 1992. At the core of it all =
was a simple, star-fangled nut hammered into the fork steer tube that allow=
ed the headset to be preloaded securely. This humble piece was inspired by =
the hardware that holds caster wheels on office chairs - a chance discovery=
 made in one of our own conference rooms when an chair broke.=C2=A0

Now, most bikes on earth use headset descended from the original Aheadset. =
It=E2=80=99s easily up there with the most significant bicycle patents of a=
ll time, and it all stemmed from a desire to make bikes better.

. Rader showed Peter a new design of a headset that allowed you to swap for=

=99 system was simple, lightweight, and far easier to adjust and maintain t=
han the clunky threaded headsets that had dominated bicycles for decades.</=
