Once upon a time, I thought learning guitar would make me better at math.
It sounded logical. Both involve patterns, rhythm, and numbers. Surely stru=
mming chords would somehow make algebra less painful.

biggest traps in education: assuming that knowledge automatically transfers=

In fact, most of what we learn stays locked inside the specific context whe=

### **Why Transfer Matters**
Transfer is what allows a musician to pick up a new instrument faster, a pr=
ogrammer to learn a new language easily, or a student to apply classroom th=
eory in real life.
It=E2=80=99s the difference between learning facts and learning principles.
A [study from the American Psychological Association](https://www.apa.org/r=
esearch/action/transfer-learning) describes transfer as the ability to exte=
nd what you=E2=80=99ve learned from one situation to another. It=E2=80=99s =
not automatic, but it can be trained.
Without transfer, you end up with what researchers call **inert knowledge**=

de of a test or exercise.
That=E2=80=99s why you can ace a grammar quiz but still struggle to hold a =
conversation in Spanish.

### **The Brain Problem: Context Dependency**
The brain doesn=E2=80=99t store facts in neat, transferable folders. It tie=
s memories to the environment, emotions, and cues present when you first le=
arned them.
This is called **context-dependent memory**.
A [classic study from the University of Dundee](https://www.dundee.ac.uk/st=

ts underwater remembered them better underwater than on land, and vice vers=
