Every day, educators, school leaders, and brave policymakers are trying to =
keep the lights on =E2=80=94 figuratively and sometimes literally =E2=80=94=
 in a time of unrest, political stalemate, and government shutdowns. They d=
o so because they believe that amid chaos, education can still create order=
, meaning, and hope.
As author Andy Crouch reminded a new cohort of Yass Prize contenders this w=
eek, now is the time for more connection than ever before. Flourishing, he =
says, doesn=E2=80=99t come from efficiency or technology, but from relation=
ship =E2=80=94 from =E2=80=9Chouseholds=E2=80=9D and =E2=80=9Ccanopies of t=
rust=E2=80=9D where no one can be missing without everyone noticing.
It made me think: is this what our founders envisioned as we head toward Am=
erica=E2=80=99s 250th? How do we, as citizens and teachers and parents, com=
municate about our differences in a world that=E2=80=99s forgotten how to l=
isten?
When Marches Had Meaning
Just days ago, I walked right into a =E2=80=9CNo Kings=E2=80=9D protest in =
New York City. I stopped and watched, trying to make sense of it. If I were=
 from another planet =E2=80=94 or hadn=E2=80=99t watched the news =E2=80=94=
 I wouldn=E2=80=99t have known what they were marching for.
When Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and thousands of Americans marched from Sel=
ma to Montgomery in 1965, it wasn=E2=80=99t chaos or catharsis =E2=80=94 it=
 was conviction. Peaceful, purposeful, and anchored in a moral vision large=
r than any one person, the Selma march embodied the very essence of human f=
lourishing: meaning and purpose, character and virtue. It was about issues,=
 not individuals; about the right to participate in democracy itself.
That same spirit surfaced decades later in another, very different march =
=E2=80=94 when students, parents, and educators crossed the Brooklyn Bridge=
 to demand the right to attend schools that served them. Twice in the past =
decade, tens of thousands of families from New York City=E2=80=99s public c=
harter schools have filled the streets wearing bright yellow shirts and car=
rying banners that read =E2=80=9CDon=E2=80=99t Steal Possible.=E2=80=9D The=
y weren=E2=80=99t attacking anyone =E2=80=94 they were defending opportunit=
y. It was a march for something, not against someone.
Both movements =E2=80=94 one for civil rights, the other for educational ri=
ghts =E2=80=94 were grounded in what the Harvard Human Flourishing Program =
defines as the pillars of a good life: meaning and purpose, happiness, char=
acter, and virtue. When those elements are missing from public protest or c=
ivic engagement, we risk losing the very thing that propels human progress.
Flourishing requires direction. It=E2=80=99s not the noise of a crowd that =
moves history, but the purpose of its steps.
The Science of Flourishing
The much-cited insights about the primacy of connection in human flourishin=
g aren=E2=80=99t just philosophical =E2=80=94 they=E2=80=99re backed by rob=
ust, global research. The Human Flourishing Program at Harvard University [=
 https://substack.com/redirect/8aedbede-cb23-404d-b018-b73e7f0f0cb3?j=3DeyJ=
1IjoiMW1zczB2In0.mPOBgCsOK0rV8K8EQzbj-Zf3WhVG0JcQPFKD4xxFx0w ], founded in =
2016, unites scholars across disciplines to answer one question: What makes=
 life go well?
Their flagship Global Flourishing Study [ https://substack.com/redirect/639=
5610f-2ce3-49ab-bc51-185dc26b537d?j=3DeyJ1IjoiMW1zczB2In0.mPOBgCsOK0rV8K8EQ=
zbj-Zf3WhVG0JcQPFKD4xxFx0w ], launched with Baylor University and the Insti=
tute for the Studies of Religion, includes over 200,000 participants in 22 =
countries =E2=80=94 the largest longitudinal study of its kind. It measures=
 six domains of well-being:
Happiness and life satisfaction
Physical and mental health
Meaning and purpose
Character and virtue
Close social relationships
Financial and material stability
The results are striking: connection =E2=80=94 to family, faith, community,=
 and purpose =E2=80=94 consistently predicts flourishing more strongly than=
 income, wealth, or academic achievement.
As researcher Tyler J. VanderWeele put it,
=E2=80=9CFlourishing is a state in which all aspects of a person=E2=80=99s =
life are good.=E2=80=9D
And as The New York Times summarized Harvard=E2=80=99s research,
=E2=80=9CGood relationships keep us happier and healthier. Period.=E2=80=9D
Education, the Harvard team notes, is one of the key pathways to flourishin=
g, alongside family, work, and faith. Schools that foster belonging, meanin=
g, and joy may contribute more to lifelong well-being than those focused so=
lely on performance metrics.
Flourishing, then, is not an abstraction. It=E2=80=99s measurable, observab=
le, and deeply human.
The Canopy of Trust
That truth came to life in our recent conversation with Andy Crouch, author=
 of The Life We=E2=80=99re Looking For. Crouch argues that flourishing depe=
nds on communities where people are truly known =E2=80=94 what he calls =E2=
=80=9Ccanopies of trust.=E2=80=9D In education, that looks like schools as =
households: places =E2=80=9Cwhere no one can be missing without everyone no=
ticing.=E2=80=9D
He also reminded us that flourishing isn=E2=80=99t just about happiness; it=
=E2=80=99s about formation.
=E2=80=9CDevices get things done without forming us. Tools form us as we us=
e them.=E2=80=9D
His now-famous metaphor captured it perfectly:
=E2=80=9CUsing AI to do your work is like bringing a forklift to the gym. I=
t lifts the weight for you, but it doesn=E2=80=99t make you strong.=E2=80=
=9D
And perhaps his most powerful reminder:
=E2=80=9CIf every additional year of schooling reflects less joy, something=
=E2=80=99s wrong. We should be assessing joy.=E2=80=9D
That=E2=80=99s the challenge =E2=80=94 and the invitation =E2=80=94 for eve=
ryone working to transform education today: to restore joy, purpose, and fo=
rmation to the center of learning.
Technology, Tools, and the Human Touch
This theme runs through the work of the 2025 Yass Prize Contenders [ https:=

To me, the value of AI is in expanding the reach of great content =E2=80=94=

aps, customizing instruction more efficiently than traditional models. But =
it must be built on a foundation of great human teaching, purposeful conten=
t, and relationships that make learning stick.
As Crouch argues, like the hammer or the pencil, what we do manually =E2=80=
=94 reading, writing, thinking slowly =E2=80=94 builds not just skill but c=
haracter. If we can find that balance between human formation and AI-fueled=
 delivery, we=E2=80=99ll have the best of both worlds.

 we can solve as we deploy this year=E2=80=99s Yass Prize Contenders to lig=
